Surgical-Grade Resurfacing for Dramatic Renewal

Chemical peels range in strength from mild and superficial to aggressive, deep peels. At Connecticut Facial Plastic Surgery, our surgeons perform medium-depth and deep chemical peeling. This level of peeling allows for transformative skin rejuvenation that cannot be replicated with lighter treatments. When you visit our Farmington, Connecticut office for a consultation, Dr. Seeley will listen to your cosmetic goals and your recovery preferences, before helping you pick the peel that's right for you.

How Do Chemical Peels Work to Provide Chemical Peel Benefits?

Chemical peels are a form of deep exfoliation. When the peeling solution is applied to the skin, it triggers the gradual dissolution of dead and damaged skin cells. Importantly, a chemical peel doesn’t physically remove skin layers during treatment. Instead, over six to ten days, the old skin cells naturally flake off. This process offers two significant chemical peel benefits: it eliminates compromised cells due to factors like UV radiation or hyperpigmentation, stimulating the body to generate new, healthy cells. This rejuvenation process also enhances collagen production, strengthening and revitalizing the skin, ultimately delivering chemical peel benefits of a more resilient and youthful complexion.

What Do Chemical Peels Treat?

Chemical peels in Hartford at Connecticut Facial Plastic Surgery are a great way to treat the following skin conditions:

  • A chemical peel for acne scars can minimize acne scarring by gradually resurfacing the skin and smoothing the transitions between the healthy skin and the scar. This improves the overall skin quality and helps erase the borders of the scars. Our chemical peel for acne scars is often done in conjunction with other treatments depending on the type and degree of scarring.
  • Wrinkles, fine lines, and areas of rough skin – Dermal peels restore skin that's become stretched and creased over time, causing a layer of healthy skin to form in its place. The collagen-boosting effects of peels also improve the overall fullness and firmness of the skin; smoothing wrinkles and improving texture.
  • Hyperpigmentation, such as melasma, sun spots, and excessive freckling – Chemical peels can remove uneven, large, or dark blemishes, making the skin brighter and more even in tone.

What to Expect During Recovery from a Chemical Peel

The duration of chemical peel recovery varies widely depending on the strength of the peel. Our medium-depth chemical peels are followed by about five to seven days of redness, mild swelling, and flaking. Deep peels, by contrast, may require up to two weeks of healing time. Though chemical peel recovery is associated with cosmetic side effects, it’s not typically painful. Some irritation and dryness are to be expected, but these symptoms can be controlled with the appropriate use of hydrating creams.

Patients who have a medium-depth chemical peel may need to take one week off work, depending on their job. It’s also important to avoid sun exposure for three to four weeks after having your treatment as your skin will be much more susceptible to UV damage while it’s healing. A deep chemical peel requires two full weeks to recover and you should plan to take this time off from work.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for Chemical Peeling?

Most healthy adults can successfully undergo chemical peeling. However, patients with dark skin may be advised to avoid the deep chemical peel, as they have a heightened risk of experiencing uneven skin pigmentation after treatment. The anti-aging effects of chemical peels are more profound for younger patients (those under 50), as this treatment can’t tighten or lift very loose skin. Mature patients benefit the most from a combination of facial rejuvenation surgery and chemical peeling to treat the signs of skin aging.

Frequently Asked Questions Chemical Peels

How can I choose the right chemical peel based on my skin concerns and goals?

You should consult with a qualified provider who will assess your skin type, concerns, and goals to recommend the most suitable chemical peel. Our treatment options include chemical peel for acne scars, hyperpigmentation, signs of aging, and more.

What tips should I follow to prepare for a chemical peel, and what can I expect during the recovery process?

Always follow your provider's pre-peel instructions, which may include discontinuing certain skincare products. After a chemical peel, you can expect some redness, mild swelling, and flaking during the recovery. Hydrating creams can help with managing the flaking during recovery.

How can I combine chemical peels with other treatments like dermal fillers or Botox for enhanced results?

Combining chemical peels with other treatments can be discussed during a consultation with Dr. Seeley or Dr. Karter. This combination approach can address multiple aesthetic concerns and achieve more comprehensive results.

How much does a chemical peel cost?

The cost of a chemical peel varies depending on factors like the type of peel, the provider's expertise, and your location. Give our office a call, our team will be happy to provide you with a cost guideline based on your specific concerns or needs.

Do chemical peels hurt?

During a chemical peel, you may experience some mild discomfort or a tingling sensation, but it is generally not painful. Providers often use numbing creams or mild sedation to minimize discomfort.

How long does a chemical peel take?

The duration of a chemical peel treatment typically ranges from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the type and depth of the peel. Deeper peels may take longer.

What is a chemical peel facial?

A chemical peel facial is a cosmetic treatment that involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin's surface. It helps improve skin texture, tone, and appearance by removing dead skin cells and promoting skin renewal.

How often should you get a chemical peel?

The frequency of chemical peel treatments depends on the type of peel and your skincare goals. Superficial peels can be done every 2-4 weeks, while deeper peels are typically performed less frequently, often once or twice a year.

Can you wear makeup after a chemical peel?

It's generally recommended to avoid wearing makeup immediately after a chemical peel, as your skin may be sensitive and healing. Our facial plastic surgeons will advise you on when it's safe to resume makeup application, usually after the initial healing period.
